What is a DCR file?

DCR – Kodak RAW photo. DCR is a RAW photo format from Kodak: the data straight from the camera's sensor, before it is turned into a JPG. It keeps more detail to adjust, but needs a RAW converter to be opened.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF – AVIF image. AVIF is a newer picture format based on the AV1 video codec. It gives smaller files than JPG or WebP at the same quality and supports transparency, but it is slower to create and older software cannot open it.

Good to know

  • Choose a quality in Options: lower numbers make a smaller AVIF with less detail.
  • DCR files are developed on our server with the camera's own white balance, then saved as AVIF. Expect a good-looking picture, not a replacement for your RAW editor.
  • Tick Remove metadata in Options to leave out information stored in the picture, such as the camera and the place.

Frequently asked questions

Is converting DCR to AVIF free?

Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.

Are my DCR pictures uploaded anywhere?

This conversion runs on our server, because a browser can't develop camera RAW files. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion.

How large can the DCR file be?

Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.

Can I change the size or quality of the AVIF?

Yes. Click Options next to the file to set a width and height, choose a quality, remove metadata and more. Only the settings that make sense for DCR to AVIF are shown.

Can I convert several DCR files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
