What is an OTF file?

OTF – OpenType font. OTF (OpenType) is the modern font format by Adobe and Microsoft: it holds PostScript or TrueType outlines and can add ligatures, small capitals and other typographic features. Every operating system installs it.

What is an SVG file?

SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics. SVG is the web's vector picture format: shapes, paths and text described in XML, so the drawing stays sharp at any size. Every browser draws it, and design programs open it.

Good to know

  • The SVG is an SVG font: every letter is a shape inside a <font>, which only old Safari and iOS read. It is not a picture of text.
  • Check the font's licence before converting and using it: ConvertKitty does not look at what the licence allows.

Frequently asked questions

Is converting OTF to SVG free?

Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.

Are my OTF files uploaded anywhere?

This conversion runs on our server, because converting fonts needs FontForge, which does not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.

How large can the OTF file be?

Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.

Will the SVG look the same as the OTF?

Yes: the letter shapes, spacing and kerning are kept. Hinting, the instructions that sharpen small text on old screens, is made again or left out, and you will not see the difference on modern screens.

Can I convert several OTF files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
