What is a PDF file?
PDF – PDF document. PDF is the document format that looks the same on every device: it fixes where each letter and picture goes on a page. It is made for reading and printing, not for editing.
PDF Converter →What is an RTF file?
RTF – Rich Text Format document. RTF (Rich Text Format) is a plain text format with formatting codes. Almost every word processor reads it, which made it the usual way to exchange formatted text; it has no real support for modern features.

PDF vs RTF: how they compare
| RTF | ||
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed pages | Flowing text |
| Editable | Hard | Yes |
| Created by | Adobe, 1993 | Microsoft, 1987 |
| Best for | Sharing and printing documents | Exchanging formatted text between different programs |
Good to know
- The RTF is made so that word processors can edit it.
- Text, pictures and tables are rebuilt from the way the PDF places them on its pages. Simple documents come out well; complex layouts need touching up, and a scanned PDF (a picture of text) has no text to convert.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting PDF to RTF free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my PDF files uploaded anywhere?
This conversion runs on our server, because rebuilding an RTF file from a PDF needs tools that do not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.
How large can the PDF file be?
Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.
Will the RTF look the same as the PDF?
The text and structure are kept: headings, lists, tables, bold and italic. Exact page layout, fonts and spacing may differ, because RTF is flowing text, not fixed pages.
Can I convert several PDF files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
