To convert PDF to TXT, select or drop your .pdf file above, check that TXT is chosen as the output, and click Convert. Files up to 200 MB are converted right in your browser, so they never leave your device.
What is a PDF file?
PDF – PDF document. PDF is the document format that looks the same on every device: it fixes where each letter and picture goes on a page. It is made for reading and printing, not for editing.
PDF Converter →What is a TXT file?
TXT – Plain text. TXT is plain text with no formatting, fonts or pictures. Every device opens it and it never goes out of date.
TXT Converter →How to convert PDF to TXT
- Click Select File, or drop your .pdf files anywhere on this page. You can add several at once.
- Check that TXT is chosen as the output format. On this page it is picked for you.
- Click Convert. When a file has to go to our server, the button says Upload and convert instead.
- Click Download next to each file when it's done.
PDF vs TXT: how they compare
| TXT | ||
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed pages | Flowing text |
| Editable | Hard | Yes |
| Created by | Adobe, 1993 | Plain text has no single inventor |
| Best for | Sharing and printing documents | Notes, logs and anything that must open everywhere |
Good to know
- Only the text is kept: fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not.
- The text is taken from the PDF in reading order. A scanned PDF has no text layer, so nothing comes out; ConvertKitty does not read text from pictures.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting PDF to TXT free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my PDF files uploaded anywhere?
Plain text, Markdown, HTML and Word files, and PDFs turned into pictures or text, are converted inside your browser and never leave your device. Other conversions, and files over 200 MB, are sent to our server over an encrypted connection and deleted 72 hours after the conversion; the server has no internet access while it works on your file. The button says "Upload and convert" whenever that happens.
How large can the PDF file be?
Files up to 200 MB are converted right in your browser. Larger files, up to 1 GB, are converted on our server.
Will the TXT look the same as the PDF?
No: a TXT file holds only the text. Fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not kept.
Can I convert several PDF files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
