What is an RTF file?
RTF – Rich Text Format document. RTF (Rich Text Format) is a plain text format with formatting codes. Almost every word processor reads it, which made it the usual way to exchange formatted text; it has no real support for modern features.

RTF vs TXT: how they compare
| RTF | TXT | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Flowing text | Flowing text |
| Editable | Yes | Yes |
| Created by | Microsoft, 1987 | Plain text has no single inventor |
| Best for | Exchanging formatted text between different programs | Notes, logs and anything that must open everywhere |
Good to know
- The RTF file is opened by LibreOffice. Fonts it does not have are replaced, so line and page breaks can differ a little from the program that made the file.
- Only the text is kept: fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting RTF to TXT free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my RTF files uploaded anywhere?
This conversion runs on our server, because reading an RTF file needs LibreOffice, which does not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.
How large can the RTF file be?
Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.
Will the TXT look the same as the RTF?
No: a TXT file holds only the text. Fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not kept.
Can I convert several RTF files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
