What is an SVG file?

SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics. SVG is the web's vector picture format: shapes, paths and text described in XML, so the drawing stays sharp at any size. Every browser draws it, and design programs open it.

What is an EOT file?

EOT – Embedded OpenType font. EOT (Embedded OpenType) is the web font format of Internet Explorer 6 to 11. No other browser reads it; new sites use WOFF2 instead. It is only needed for very old Internet Explorer.

Good to know

  • The font is converted by FontForge: the letter shapes, spacing and kerning are kept. Hinting (the instructions that sharpen small text) is made again or left out, which modern screens do not show.
  • Only an SVG font can be converted, a file whose letters are <glyph> shapes inside a <font>. An SVG drawing is not a font. For safety, references to other files in the SVG are left out.
  • EOT is read only by Internet Explorer 6 to 11. Every other browser uses WOFF or WOFF2.
  • Check the font's licence before converting and using it: ConvertKitty does not look at what the licence allows.

Frequently asked questions

Is converting SVG to EOT free?

Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.

Are my SVG files uploaded anywhere?

This conversion runs on our server, because converting fonts needs FontForge, which does not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.

How large can the SVG file be?

Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.

Will the EOT look the same as the SVG?

Yes: the letter shapes, spacing and kerning are kept. Hinting, the instructions that sharpen small text on old screens, is made again or left out, and you will not see the difference on modern screens.

Can I convert several SVG files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
