XLS – Microsoft Excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. XLS is the spreadsheet format of Excel 97 to 2003. Newer programs still open it, but it holds fewer rows and is bigger than XLSX.

Good to know
- The XLS file is opened by LibreOffice, not by Microsoft Office. Text, tables, pictures and ordinary charts convert accurately; effects such as SmartArt, animations, some chart styles and fonts LibreOffice does not have can look different from Office, so check a complex file before relying on it.
- Each page becomes a picture. A document with more than one page comes back as a ZIP with a PNG for each page, drawn at 150 dots per inch unless you choose otherwise in Options.
- The text in the pictures cannot be selected or searched.
