What is a TEX file?
TEX – LaTeX document. TeX (here LaTeX) is a typesetting language: the document is text with commands, and a program lays it out as pages. It is the standard in mathematics and science for its formulas.
TEX Converter →What is a TXT file?
TXT – Plain text. TXT is plain text with no formatting, fonts or pictures. Every device opens it and it never goes out of date.

TEX vs TXT: how they compare
| TEX | TXT | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed pages once typeset | Flowing text |
| Editable | Yes | Yes |
| Created by | Donald Knuth (TeX), 1978; Leslie Lamport (LaTeX), 1984 | Plain text has no single inventor |
| Best for | Papers with formulas, theses and books | Notes, logs and anything that must open everywhere |
Good to know
- Only the text is kept: fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not.
- LaTeX is converted by pandoc, which understands the common commands, math and tables but not every package.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting TEX to TXT free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my TEX files uploaded anywhere?
This conversion runs on our server, because typesetting LaTeX needs TeX, which does not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.
How large can the TEX file be?
Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.
Will the TXT look the same as the TEX?
No: a TXT file holds only the text. Fonts, colors, tables and pictures are not kept.
Can I convert several TEX files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
