To convert TXT to ODT, select or drop your .txt file above, check that ODT is chosen as the output, and click Convert. This conversion runs on our server, and your files are deleted 72 hours later.
What is a TXT file?
TXT – Plain text. TXT is plain text with no formatting, fonts or pictures. Every device opens it and it never goes out of date.
TXT Converter →What is an ODT file?
ODT – OpenDocument text. ODT is the text document of LibreOffice, OpenOffice and other OpenDocument programs: an open format, and a ZIP of XML files. Word opens it too.

TXT vs ODT: how they compare
| TXT | ODT | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Flowing text | Flowing text |
| Editable | Yes | Yes |
| Created by | Plain text has no single inventor | OASIS (OpenDocument standard), 2005 |
| Best for | Notes, logs and anything that must open everywhere | Documents in LibreOffice or other open software |
Good to know
- The ODT is made so that word processors can edit it.
- The text is converted as it is: a blank line starts a new paragraph, and marks like # and * are not treated as Markdown.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting TXT to ODT free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my TXT files uploaded anywhere?
This conversion runs on our server, because it needs tools that do not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.
How large can the TXT file be?
Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.
Will the ODT look the same as the TXT?
The text and structure are kept: headings, lists, tables, bold and italic. Exact page layout, fonts and spacing may differ, because ODT is flowing text, not fixed pages.
Can I convert several TXT files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
