What is a TXT file?
TXT – Plain text. TXT is plain text with no formatting, fonts or pictures. Every device opens it and it never goes out of date.
TXT Converter →What is a TEX file?
TEX – LaTeX document. TeX (here LaTeX) is a typesetting language: the document is text with commands, and a program lays it out as pages. It is the standard in mathematics and science for its formulas.

TXT vs TEX: how they compare
| TXT | TEX | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Flowing text | Fixed pages once typeset |
| Editable | Yes | Yes |
| Created by | Plain text has no single inventor | Donald Knuth (TeX), 1978; Leslie Lamport (LaTeX), 1984 |
| Best for | Notes, logs and anything that must open everywhere | Papers with formulas, theses and books |
Good to know
- The text is converted as it is: a blank line starts a new paragraph, and marks like # and * are not treated as Markdown.
Frequently asked questions
Is converting TXT to TEX free?
Yes. Everyone gets 25 free credits a day, with no account needed. Conversions on our server use one credit per started minute of work, so most cost a single credit. Credits reset at midnight UTC.
Are my TXT files uploaded anywhere?
This conversion runs on our server, because it needs tools that do not run in a browser. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, and both it and the result are deleted 72 hours after the conversion. The server has no internet access while it works on your file.
How large can the TXT file be?
Up to 1 GB per file. This conversion runs on our server, which accepts files up to that size.
Will the TEX look the same as the TXT?
The text and structure are kept: headings, lists, tables, bold and italic. Exact page layout, fonts and spacing may differ, because TEX works differently from TXT.
Can I convert several TXT files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they are converted one after another, and each one gets its own Download button.
